Typology Study & Hybridization

an urban design warm-up exercise

Four random typologies – two open space, and two building – were analyzed to determine the typical context, geometry, dimensions, etc. that define the type.

One building + one open space, and other building + other open space were combined or multiplied to produce new hybrid forms.

Of the two combinations, the plaza and mat hybridization develops further, influencing each other through the lenses of modularity and temporality.

PUBLIC AMENITY X PUBLIC OFFICE = COLONNADE

Public bathrooms, cafes, restaurants, and moveable seating in covered area meet the offices of those who run the city. When they look outside their window, they are confronted with the activities of everyday urban dwellers. Meanwhile, a highline of adventurers occupy the area of deserved plaza displaced by the intrusion of the mat.

PROXIMITY TO PUBLIC TRANSPORT X CITY SERVICES

Want to know how the city works? Look no further. The subway terminal connects urbanites to the central plaza and workers and public alike sous terre to investigate and monitor the city’s infrastructural masterpiece, adding depth to the mat and thickness to the plaza.

MONUMENT + WATER FEATURE X MUNICIPAL DEPARTMENTS

In the boardrooms and council chambers, transom skylights double as seating edges for plaza-goers. The giant fountain-cum-wading pool serves as a secondary light source. The decision-makers are held accountable to the gods and to the feet of their people walking by. Nearby, administrative offices make up the literal and symbolic arch that supports the plaza’s monumental structure.

CONTINUOUS PAVING X PUBLIC ATRIUM & HALLWAYS

In order to get from office to meeting, the Mayor and his staff must cross paths with citizens using the square. The sights, smells, and sounds of the city become apparent to those who serve and dwell within it.

TEMPORALITY

The public plaza becomes the carpet of the government and the host to daily and seasonal cycles of celebration, protest, feeding, working, and sleeping – an integral component of city life.

MODULARITY

Flexibility in overall layout is made possible by specificity in the modules based on key dimensions derived from human interaction and occupation.
