The Lumberyard & Cedar Gallery

Mitchell Island Model

Located on a brownfield industrial site between Vancouver and Richmond on Mitchell Island, the Lumberyard and accompanying Cedar Gallery leads users through an interpretive experience based around wood production processes. The journey through art as forest/forest as art culminates in a 1000 square foot art gallery located on the remnants of an old railway shipping pier once integral to Vancouver’s industrial growth. Encased in a glue laminated, tectonic cocoon and bottom lit, the pier’s reincarnation as the structure and floor of the gallery speak about progress and heritage. Taken together with the Lumberyard park, the design aims to question the ideas of progress and reclamation.
