The Woodwards Condominium project in Vancouver is a mixed-income development designed by Henriquez Partners. Located in the heart of Gastown, at it’s time of construction, the housing project realized lofty goals of mixing market price and low income housing within the same building. As a project aimed at generating inclusivity, the way it connects to the street and all of its connotations is especially important.
This collage takes a small slice: the volume of a shipping container’s worth of information of the site, and literally adds layers of grease, dirt, history, and contemporary feelings towards the space into the worms-eye view of the site. In doing so, it asks viewers to see behind, around, and beneath the newly poured concrete columns that adorn the entryway landscape, at the strata of involvement that architecture takes in contemporary urban conditions.
